Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is located near the Gol Dak Khana, New Delhi. Henry Medd was the designer of this church and Rev. Dr. E. Vanni, Archbishop of Agra, laid its foundation stone in the year 1929. 

The construction of the church started in 1930 and the most beautiful parts of the church are its broad arches, polished stone floors and towering curved roof.

The main Altar of the Church was donated by Sir Anthony de Mello and it is made of pure marble. 

The Archbishop of Agra, on the hand, presented the altar furniture, vestments and a bell and the whole project was completely financed by the colonial officers of the British Empire. An Italian influence can also be noticed in its structure as the white pillars are very beautifully designed which support the canopy.

The Church organizes functions on certain days of the year and the major ceremonies held at the Cathedral are Easter and Christmas. Daily Prayers are held in every morning and evening and the special prayers are held on Sunday morning.

Cathedral Church of the Redemption in Delhi


Cathedral Church of the RedemptionThe Cathedral Church of the Redemption is counted amongst the most beautiful and magnificent Churches in India. 

It is located to the east of Parliament House; and was also designed by Henry Medd.  The then Viceroy of India, Lord Irwin was so influenced by the structure of the church that it became popularly known as “Viceroy’s Church”.

The Cathedral Church of the Redemption has those fine-looking curved arches and subtle domes.

The spiritual atmosphere becomes lively during the morning and evening prayers. The church was built in such a manner that even in the extreme summers it remains cool and serene because of its proper ventilation.

The Church has delicate domes and beautifully curved high arches. Lord Irwin gifted a silver Cross and an organ and to the Church.

The Cathedral Church of the Redemption also contributes in the field of education and health and has many prestigious educational institutions under it which includes:

St. James' Church in Delhi

St James’ Church on Lothian Street is one of the most beautiful and oldest churches in Delhi. The church isSt. James' Church built in the shape of a Greek cross and surmounted by an imposing eight leafed dome

It was first erected by the legendary commander of Skinner's Horse, James Skinner. 

Until the Cathedral Church of the Redemption, was built near Gurudwara Rakab Ganj, in 1931, it served as the church of the Viceroy of India.

There are the graves of the Skinner family and some martyrs of the 1857 war on the north of the church.  It also has the grave of the British Commissioner and a dear friend of Skinner’s, William Fraser, whose Bungalow is just around the corner.

Central Baptist Church in Delhi

Central Baptist Church

The Central Baptist Church is located at Chandni Chowk Road opposite to Gurdwara Sisganj and is the oldest Christian mission in the whole of North India. 

The church is well maintained with its original cravings and motifs, and has a touch of European architecture of that time, which is worth admiring.

The entrance on the southern part of the church has large deep colonnaded porch supported on thick columns. 

The other two sides have double-height verandahs with semi-circular arch shaped openings. The walls of the church have memorial tablets remembering those faithful lives, who devoted their whole life in the service of the church.
